To work in a healthcare profession in Finland, you must obtain a license from Valvira (National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health). This requirement applies to individuals trained in Finland, other EU/EEA countries and countries outside the EU/EEA. Valvira also grants the right to practice, and use protected occupational titles.

On Valvira's website , you can find a profession-specific breakdown of the requirements for the recognition of your qualification.

Each decision regarding licensing incurs a fee, which the applicant must cover, along with any additional training costs.

Valvira (National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health) specifies that everyone working in the healthcare sector must be able to communicate with patients in Finland’s official language, which are Finnish and Swedish. At the start of your employment, our expectation is that you can use Finnish at a basic level, both orally and in writing. We also strongly believe that language skills improve through practical work, and we do not expect your Finnish to be perfect when you apply to us.

We encourage you to submit your application in Finnish. Depending on the positions job interviews are usually conducted in Finnish, and your language skills may be assessed during the interview if necessary. As an employer, we aim to support language learning in the workplace through good practices and by providing additional resources for learning Finnish.

The required level of Finnish proficiency also depends on the specific job you are applying for. Please note that some professions require language proficiency tests defined by Valvira, which must be completed.

The most important thing, however, is that you have a genuine willingness to learn and use Finnish with confidence!

Valvira recommends a Finnish language proficiency level of A2–B1. See the different levels used to define language skills by Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, (CEFR)

However, when applying for a job, the employer has the discretion to evaluate whether the applicant's language skills are sufficient for the role.

This downloadable form also allows you to assess your own language proficiency level in Finnish.
