The Central Finland Rescue Department provides rescue services within its operational area as well as emergency medical services in some parts of the region. The duties of the rescue services are determined in the Rescue Act and include accident prevention, rescue operations and preparations for exceptional circumstances. In addition to these duties, the rescue department cooperates with various authorities and other rescue departments. The goal of the rescue services' duties is the protection of people, environment and property.

There are five fire stations in the Central Finland Rescue Department area that are permanently occupied around the clock: In Jyväskylä, fire stations of Ristonmaa, Seppälä and Vaajakoski, Jämsä fire station and Äänekoski fire station. In day crewed fire stations, such as Viitasaari, Saarijärvi, Laukaa and Keuruu, the fire stations have an immediate deployment capability of 3-4 people during office hours.
